Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo. President Punjab PPP, while welcoming the statement of the Prime Minister of Pakistan in Iran to resume the Iran- Pakistan Gas Pipeline project added it would have not put in the back burner by the government in the first place. Better late than never, he observed.
He said that the former President of Pakistan Asef Ali Zardari took many visits to Iran and put in lot of efforts to finalize the project which saw the light of the day when two Presidents, Iran and Pakistan, jointly inaugurated the project in March 2013.
He said that the wastage of time in undertaking the project by the present government not only hurt the endeavours to overcome the energy crisis in the country but also was not appreciated by the neighbourly brotherly Islamic country and the relations have been under stress since then.
He said that the Iran Gas Pipeline Project as originally planned contemplated its completion by December 2014 and the flow of much needed gas through the pipelines to Pakistan by the end of this year or early next year.
He recalled that the flow of gas would be enough for generating more than 2000 mw electricity enough to ensure uninterrupted supply of energy to the industrial sector the productivity of which had been suffering due to the non-availability of sufficient energy.
He further said that the vision of connecting China and India with the Gas Pipeline was the real possibility because both the countries were energy starved and the gas pipeline had offered the best viable option to these countries as well.
The connectivity of the pipeline with these two countries will be a constant source of much needed revenue besides the promotion of diplomatic and strategic interests of Pakistan.
The economic inter-dependence of the three countries will undoubtedly accelerate the process of normalization between the Pakistan and India based on mutual respects and mutual interest in particular.
The completion of the project will surely further strengthen the relations between Pakistan and Iran who share common religion, history and culture.
Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo underscored the importance of realizing the full potential available in sectors of economy that remained untapped because of want of matching efforts to formulate mechanism for the purpose.
He expressed the hope that with the undertaking of the Gas Pipeline project, both the countries will improve their relations on fast track basis for the benefit of the people of two countries.
