PPP Punjab Executive Committee on Friday unanimously requested Punjab president of the party, Mian Manzoor Ahmad Wattoo, to withdraw his resignation.
The committee also requested the PPP leadership not to accept Wattoo’s resignation.
The meeting of the committee was attended by Raja Riaz, Tanvir Ashraf Kaira, Munir Ahmed Khan, Tasnim Ahmed Qureshi, Tariq Gujjar, Haji Azizur Rehman Chan, Aurangzeb Burki, Dewan Muhayyudin, Khurram Latif Khusa and others.
The resolution was presented by Raja Riaz and unanimously adopted the stance that if the party leadership accepted resignation of Wattoo, all the members of the Punjab Executive Committee would also leave the party.
Meanwhile, addressing to participants, Wattoo said that PPP had accepted the results of elections with reservations only for the cause of democracy in the country. He said the Election Commission should take notice of rigging in Punjab and issue order of recounting of votes of polling stations which were being highlighted. He said he had done a lot for the PPP in last six months but unfortunately the party could not do well in the polls. He said he had resigned from the post of the PPP central president on moral grounds after the defeat.
Mian Manzoor Wattoo further said President Asif Zardari was coming to Lahore on Monday to meet the nominated office-bearers of the PPP in Punjab and party workers. He said the President would also discuss reorganization of the party in detail. Wattoo stated that the PPP had got more strength after recent defeat and it would continue serving the people.
After the meeting, Wattoo during a press conference told the media that he had withdrew his resignation from the party position after the insistence of the PPP Punjab Executive Council in the meeting.
He also informed that other party position holders in the province had offered their resignation on moral grounds taking responsibility of PPP defeat but their requests were turned down and now they would continue their struggle for strengthening the party. He said that his party had accepted results despite many reservations of rigging in the polls. He also claimed that such election results were engineered and divided mandate of the parties in the provinces which could harm integrity of the country.
He demanded the Election Commission of Pakistan to hold re-check the thumb-impressions of 25 percent of the total votes cast during the poll through NADRA’s biometric system.
Mian Manzoor Wattoo expressed hope that his party would re-emerge in upcoming days under the leadership of its young chairman Bilawal Bhutto when he would start his practical politics. Confirming the visit of President Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto to Lahore on Sunday, he said they had considered the reasons of the party defeat in the executive council’s meeting and they would present these findings before the party heads in a meeting. He also answered different queries but avoided to explain the party’s stance about existence of the ‘Punjabi Taliban’ in the province in the new political scenario. He also said that they had no any ‘friendly game’ either with the PTI or the PML-N and was confirmed that the PPP would maintain its position as major opposition nominating its Opposition Leader in the National Assembly.
