Commenting on the ‘interesting’ explanation given by the the Election Commission for NA-68 results that discrepancy of some 7,000 votes was a ‘typing mistake’, PPP Punjab president Manzoor Wattoo said: “The ECP’s explanation has put a question mark on the results of May 2013 poll. Were all the results of the last year (elections) an outcome of a typing mistake,” he asked in a light vein.
Meanwhile, the party has supported the Kissan Ittehad’s demand for lifting the ban on inter-district wheat movement, saying it is hitting the farmers badly.
“The government is unable to procure the entire (wheat) yield from the farmers who are in a dire need of money to make payments for the inputs purchased on credit,” PPP Punjab secretary general Tanvir Ashraf Kaira said.
He said the ban was depriving small farmers of their legitimate returns as the surplus wheat would be purchased either by the hoarders or by the middlemen at the rates far lower than the support price.
Kaira said small farmers could not afford to hold the wheat.
He urged the provincial government to ensure check on the smuggling of wheat to other countries.
