LAHORE: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) has strongly condemned the attack on Imran Khan and his marchers in the city of Gujranwala by PML-N workers, terming it a manifestation of short-sighted approach of the government.
Reacting to the Gujranwala incident, PPP central leader Aitzaz Ahsan, who is also leader of the opposition in Senate, said that the PML-N government was dealing the current political situation with a short-sighted approach, advising it to avoid creating hurdles in marches of Imran Khan and Dr Tahirul Qadri.
About demands of the marchers, he said that these demands as well as launching long marches were not unconstitutional, especially when these were peaceful and non-violent.
PPP Punjab President Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo also condemned the attack on PTI marchers in Gujranwala on Friday afternoon and said that it was not difficult to identify the culprits because all of the TV channels showed miscreants flinging rocks and bricks towards truck in which PTI Chairman Imran Khan was travelling besides other vehicles of the march. The culprits should be given exemplary punishment, he demanded.
Wattoo stated that politics of violence was both condemnable and contemptible and must have not been resorted to due to its devastating consequences for the country’s future. He urged the government to honour its commitment of ensuring peace and security because it was its responsibility to provide security to peaceful processions and their participants.
PPP Punjab Secretary General Tanvir Ashraf Kaira has said that failure of the government to provide security to marchers would not absolve it of its responsibility on one pretext or the other. He said that the government must punish the responsible PML-N workers after ensuring their immediate arrest.
