Lahore—Pakistan Peoples Party Punjab President Imtiaz Safdar Warraich has said the first local bodies convention will be held in Lahore on September 30.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, he said the decision had been taken in a meeting.
He said all Punjab district organisations and former councillors would be invited to the convention.
“It aims to pressure the Punjab government to provide local bodies funds worth billions of rupees to elected representatives for use for the welfare of people. They will also appeal to Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to hold local bodies polls immediately,” he added.
He said participants in the meeting had flayed the anti-Islam film made by the US.
He said the film had hurt the sentiments of Muslims all over the world and a resolution was also passed against it. He said the constitution did not allow to open cases against the president.
He said the PPP would not accept any adverse court verdict against its second prime minister.
Talking to the media after chairing a party meeting here, the PPP leader said the party had been subjected to great injustices in the past and now it had lost the patience to bear any further shocks.
He was flanked by General Secretary Azizur Rehman Chan, Secretary Information Raja Amir Khan and Secretary Finance Aurangzeb Burki among others.
Imtiaz Safdar Warraich said the PPP was being victimised since long. He said it was clearly written in the Constitution that criminal proceedings could not be initiated in any court against the president of Pakistan. He was of the view that presenting the president before a foreign magistrate was tantamount to humiliating 200 million people of Pakistan. He urged the Supreme Court to strengthen the democratic institutions.
On local bodies’ elections, he said the PPP would hold first local bodies’ convention on September 30 in Lahore to put pressure on the Punjab government to conduct local elections.
