Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, President Punjab PPP, has rejected the raise in the wheat support price at the rate of Rs. 1300 per forty KG this year and demanded that the price should be fixed at Rs. 1500.
He said this in a statement issued from here stating that the raise in the wheat support price announced yesterday was too little in the face of the expensive inputs which were highest in Pakistan as compared to the other countries of the region.
He also demanded that the mechanism should be evolved by the government for giving targeted subsidy to the down trodden urban population and the poor segments of the society on the provision of flour as apart of the social security plan.
He said that the PPP would force the government to raise the support price and also provide targeted subsidy to the poor to offset the impact of the subsidies so provided for the agriculture produce.
Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo recalled that the PPP previous democratic government substantially increased the support price of wheat from Rs. 626 to Rs. 950 per forty KG in September, 2008, leading the country to attain the status of wheat exporting country in the same season from the wheat importing country during the last many years.
He pointed out that the decision brought a qualitative change in the rural economy because billions of rupees were pumped in the sector with promising prospects. All indicators showed positive trends in the health of the rural economy, he added.
He maintained that the industrialization of the country depended on the development of agriculture sector because it ensured the supply of raw material to the industrial sector at completive and affordable rates.
He said that the cost effectiveness in the agriculture sector was amazing because it was less capital intensive and returns were immediate and satisfying from the investor’s view point.
