A representative group of minorities hailing from seven divisions of central Punjab led by Younus Bhatti called on Secretary General Peoples Party Punjab, Tanvir Ashraf Kaira here today and assured him that the minorities would fully participate in the PPP Foundation Day Workers’ Convention on November 30, 2014 at. Bilawal House, Lahore.
He said that the PPP had always been very close to the minorities throughout because the PPP successive governments had taken unprecedented steps for their mainstreaming in the national affairs.
Tanvir Ashraf Kaira while welcoming the delegation said that the PPP being a liberal, progressive and pluralistic Party fully supported the minorities as equal citizens of Pakistan who had been actively taking part in the nation building process of the country.
He said that the PPP successive governments took significant steps for the well fare of the minorities in pursuance of the vision of the founding fathers.
He said that the PPP previous government reserved four seats in the Senate for the minorities from its own quota that spoke volumes of the level of commitment of the Party for their cause.
The same PPP government reserved 5% quota for the minorities in the government jobs with a view to improve their upward social mobility in the social set up, he added.
Credit goes to the same government for declaring 11 August each year as the Minorities’ Day. The date has special significance in the context of minorities’ rights because on this date Quaid-i- Azam declared that minorities would enjoy equal rights in Pakistan, Kaira recalled.
The PPP government also decided to observe two religious festivals of minorities at official level.
In the meeting Abdul Qadir Shaheen, President of Labour and Minorities Wing of the PPP, Punjab and Suhail Milk, Senior Vice President were also present.
